Exclusive Interview

A one-on-one conversation with a journalist where the interviewee agrees not to talk to any other media outlets about their topic before that publication’s article goes live. This type of interview is usually granted when the spokesperson has news that’s important enough to warrant a first run with a top-tier publication.

What professional achievement are you most proud of?

Interviewers want to see if you can take pride in your work, and that you’re capable of working as part of a team. Choose an accomplishment that showcases your professional determination, communication and organisation skills – like leading a project from start to finish or winning a major award.

Whether or not to go for an exclusive is an important decision to make early on in the PR process. It can have a massive impact on the value of your story for your target audience, but it’s also a gamble. An exclusive might not run at all or may be cut down to a three paragraph blurb instead of the feature article you had in mind.
