How to Find a Missing Person

Thousands of people go missing every day as a result of conflict and violence, disaster, migration, exile or captivity. They often die in the process. Their bodies are frequently not recovered or identified and their families are left in limbo with no news about them.

The first thing you need to do when someone goes missing is file a police report. Whether you suspect foul play or not, this is vital to start the investigation.

Ask the person’s friends, family and acquaintances what they know and where they have seen them recently. They may have been to a place the person has never visited before or they may be able to give you clues as to where they might be.

Consider making an appeal on social media platforms and ask local organisations to put up posters around the area. If you decide to do this, it’s important that the poster is a high resolution picture and that the person’s name is mentioned in the text.

Many people who voluntarily disappear do so because of anxiety or depression and they need help and support. If this is the case with your loved one, it’s important to talk to them and offer to seek professional assistance. This could include family therapy or mental health services. There are also a number of charities who can help. For example, LBT Global has a special programme to assist those who are missing as a result of conflict, disaster, displacement or persecution.
