What to Do If Your Exam Results Aren’t What You Want

Exam results can be a cause of worry, especially if they aren’t what was hoped for. For many students, it can seem like their whole future hinges on their exam grades, but if your results aren’t what you wanted it is important to remember that there are still options open to you.

If you are getting good grades, resist the urge to tell everyone about it on social media (a quick status update is fine – just don’t go overboard!). It can be really irritating for friends who didn’t do as well, and it may even detract from your own study efforts by placing extra pressure on yourself.

It can also be helpful to talk through your worries with someone, so if you haven’t done as well as you hoped for it is worth having a chat with an older relative or friend about what to do next. It can also help to have a plan for how you’ll celebrate your success!

The NYC Public Schools Department shares the results of state assessments administered in grades three through eight and AP exams taken by high school students. The results can be accessed on NYC Open Data.
